Why Four Students Is the Right Size for a Computing Class

One is a private lesson. Eight is a webinar. Four is the last number where every screen is still the mentor’s problem.

Class size in computing is not a vibe. It is a physics problem. A child who is writing code is in a private conversation with a machine that does not care about their feelings. If the adult in the room cannot see that conversation, the child will either freeze or paste.

We run 1 : 4. One mentor. Four students. Live. That is not a slogan we borrowed from a luxury brochure. It is the largest room in which we can still tell, in the first five minutes, who is stuck and who is pretending.

Pretending is the silent failure mode of online coding. Camera off, “it works on my machine,” a screenshot of a tutorial. In a room of four, pretending has nowhere to sit. The mentor is looking at four editors, not a gallery of names.

What one cannot do, and what eight will not

Private 1:1 is right for some children — a faster lane, a catch-up, a specific artefact. It is also lonelier. Computing is not only typing; it is watching someone else get stuck on a nearby problem and realising yours is not unique. Four gives you three other attempts in the same hour without turning the hour into a performance.

A child who only ever codes alone learns that struggle is a private shame. A child who sees two other people hit the same NameError learns that struggle is the work. That lesson does not require a lecture. It requires a room small enough that you can hear the other keyboards.

Eight, twelve, twenty: someone is sharing a screen they are not looking at. Someone is muted. Someone is waiting for the recording. The mentor is teaching a sequence, not a student. That can be a lecture. It is not how you learn to debug.

Four is the last number where every screen is still the mentor’s problem.

What the hour actually looks like

Four different projects, or four versions of the same brief. One child is on the title screen. One is fighting gravity. One is naming a function. One is explaining why the test went red. The mentor rotates. Nobody waits twenty minutes for their turn at the shared demo. That rotation is the product. Everything else — slides, certificates, recordings — is what you add when you cannot afford the rotation.

Holiday Intensive is still a small cohort. A two-week burst does not become honest by packing the Zoom. The schedule gets denser. The chair count does not.

What four costs, on purpose

Four is expensive compared with a webinar. That is the point. Tuition exists so the mentor can stay until the project runs — live evenings on Gulf time, never a fifth chair to improve the math. The fifth chair is how the class becomes a show.

Parents sometimes ask if their child can “just watch.” Watching is how you get a child who can narrate a tutorial and cannot write a loop. The seat is for building. If they are too tired that evening, we would rather they miss and catch up than occupy a chair as furniture.

If you want twenty children and a cartoon mascot, they exist. If you want your child to write the line, break it, and explain it, the room has to stay small enough that there is nowhere to hide.

What this means for your child

Four is not a marketing number. It is the last size where every screen is still the mentor’s problem. If the room grows for the spreadsheet, the child becomes a spectator.
